Victor Shaw Evans, Jr. was born on June 5, 1934, in West Orange, New Jersey, to parents Jane DePass and Victor Shaw Evans, Sr. He attended Woodberry Forest High School and the University of Virginia and earned his B.A. from the University of South Carolina and LL.B. from the University of South Carolina School of Law.
Evans served in the U.S. Justice Department in Washington, D.C. under Attorney General Robert Kennedy, as Deputy Attorney General in the S.C. Attorney General’s Office, and as Chief Counsel to the S.C. Highway Department.
He was a member of the South Carolina Bar, Richland County Bar Association and Greenville County Bar Association. Evans was also a member of the Charleston Old Exchange Building Commission, a Youth Sports Coach, member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and member of Heathwood Hall Booster Club. He also served as a mentor to young lawyers due in part to his expertise in eminent domain procedures.
Vic was as individualistic, independent and good humored as a first class lawyer can be. He had no ambition to promote himself. Nor did he aspire to make a fortune of money. He earned his fortune in the esteem of those who know how much he did for the people and for our profession.
Evans is survived by his wife, Molly Sheorn Evans; son, Victor Shaw Evans III, MD; daughters, Hope Evans Thompson and Mary Evans Dixon; and three grandchildren.
