Dudley Saleeby, Jr.

Dudley Saleeby, Jr. was born September 15, 1944, in Florence, SC, to parents Mary Frances Hammond and Dudley Saleeby. He received his B.A. from The Citadel in 1966 and his J.D. from Duke University School of Law in 1969. After law school he served as Captain in the U.S. Army Reserve until 1971, including a tour of duty in Vietnam.

From 1972 to 1975, he served as Assistant Attorney General for the State of SC. He partnered with Hyman, Morgan and Brown from 1976 to 1978, when he was elected Solicitor of the Twelfth Judicial Circuit. He was elected to this position four times, serving with distinction for a total of 20 years. He retired in 1999 and subsequently served 12 years as Advisor to the Third Circuit Solicitor’s Office.

Dudley was a member of the SC Bar, North Carolina Bar, National District Attorneys Association, and the SC Solicitors Association. He was licensed to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court.

 

He was president of the SC Solicitors Association from 1984 to 1985 and president of The Citadel Alumni Association in 1989. He served on The Citadel Board of Visitors from 1999 to 2005; The Citadel Foundation Board of Directors from 2006-2014; and The Citadel Presidential Search Committee in 2005.

In 1995, he received The Daniel R. McLeod Award, presented by the SC Department of Revenue for prosecuting white collar crime. In 2007, he was named Distinguished Life Member by The Citadel Alumni Association (CAA), which is the highest honor bestowed by the Association and recognizes alumni who achieved excellence in their professions and made meaningful contributions to The Citadel, the CAA and their local communities.

He was an elder and Sunday school teacher at First Presbyterian Church of Florence and was former president of the Florence Kiwanis Club.

Dudley Saleeby, Jr. died on May 15, 2022. He is survived by his spouse, Lalla Harrison Saleeby; children, Catherine “Cat” S. McDowell and Wilson “Wil” D. Saleeby; and five grandchildren, Mary Katherine Saleeby, Robert Saleeby, Adger Saleeby, Jack McDowell and Charlotte McDowell.
