Arthur Middleton Williams (1914–1990)

Arthur Middleton Williams, was born in Charleston, September 16, 1914, educated in Columbia city schools, Clemson University, Bachelor of Science, in Textile Chemistry, 1936, USC School of Law, 1942, Magna Cum Laude. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

After army service in World War II, he practiced law, taught courses at the law school, then joined South Carolina Electric & Gas Company becoming Vice President and General Counsel of SCE&G. He was elected President on August 1, 1966, CEO the following year and named Chairman of the Board of SCE&G in May 1977.

He served on the Boards of SCN Bank, SCE&G, Liberty Corporation, Benedict College, Converse College, USO, Richland County Red Cross, and numerous other worthwhile organizations. He received honorary doctorate of law degrees from Carolina, Clemson and Benedict. He was a member of Trinity Cathedral.

He died July 9, 1990, survived by his wife, the former Katherine Murphy, and three daughters.
