The Honorable Arthur Lee Gaston (1876–1951)

Born Chester, S.C., son of Solicitor John Gaston and Adelaide Lee of Sumter. Graduated Davidson College. Studied law at University of Virginia and in offices of Judge George W. Gage of Chester. Partner, Caldwell & Gaston and later Gaston, Hamilton & Gaston. Elected Judge Sixth Judicial Circuit of S.C. in 1934, retiring in 1948.

S.C. House of Representatives for 10 years, and Chairman of Judiciary Committee. Chairman Board of Regents of S.C. Hospital. First Lieutenant Spanish American War. State Commander Spanish American Veterans. In World War I Lieutenant Colonel, staff of Governor Richard I. Manning.

Distinguished Alumni Award from Davidson College. President, Chester County Bar Association, Chester Rotary Club, Chester Chamber of Commerce. Deacon and Elder of Purity Presbyterian Church.

Married 1902 to Virginia Carolina Aiken of Greenwood, S.C., and 1910 to Edith Byrd Smith of Virginia, both of whom died at an early age. Survived by a son David Aiken Gaston and daughter Sara Gaston Banks and four grandchildren.

Tall and handsome, of calm temperament, an outstanding judge and a Christian gentleman.
