Born Charlotte, North, November 4, 1909, son of Edward Mitchell and Grace Whaley. Attended College of Charleston; graduated, University of South Carolina, B.S., 1930, LL.B., 1933.
Practiced at Columbia Bar for over fifty years, first, with R. K. Wise, then with him and Thomas E. McCutchen. Founder and Senior Partner in Whaley, McCutchen, Blanton and Rhodes.
President of Exchange Club; Christmas Seal Chairman; director United Fund; and Ruling Elder, First Presbyterian Church.
Volunteered, U.S. Navy, World War II. Ineligible for commission because of eyesight, served as hospital corpsman for two years.
Devoted family man, survived at death on November 14, 1992, by widow, Katharine Asbill, two daughters, and five grandchildren.
Recognized workers compensation expert. Members of various defense trial attorneys organizations and American, South Carolina and Richland Bar Associations.
Man of integrity and ability, prodigious worker, his was an exemplary life. He is missed by all who knew him.
