Born in Columbia on August 16, 1936. Graduated from University of the South at Sewanee in 1958 and Harvard Law School in 1961. Began practice with Boyd, Bruton and Lumpkin, which later became Boyd, Knowlton, Tate & Finlay and is now Sinkler & Boyd.
Kirk was an astute, energetic lawyer. Throughout his practice, Kirk united his inherent qualities of integrity, industry and intellect, with a unique charm, that would indelibly stamp his image.
While engaged in a demanding law practice, he never forgot his community. He served on the vestry and was Senior Warden of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Vice Chancellor of the Episcopal Diocese of Upper South Carolina and a Trustee of The University of the South.
Kirk served on City Council from 1974 to 1978 and as Mayor from 1978 to 1986. As Mayor, he brought cultural growth and beauty to the City with the Palmetto Center, Koger Center, State Museum, Congaree Vista, Wheeler Hill and Sidney Park.
Kirk was a devoted family man and is survived by his wife, Rab and two children, Kirkman and Gwathmey. Kirk was happiest when surrounded by family and lifelong friends. For him the larger the crowd, the larger the audience.
