Sylvan Lewenthal Rosen was born on April 1, 1913 in Georgetown, South Carolina, the son of Harry Nathan Rosen and Dora Lewenthal Rosen. He was a student athlete at Georgetown High School, and attended The Citadel, and graduated first in his class from the University of South Carolina Law School in 1936. He began his law practice in Georgetown where he was later joined by his brother Meyer Rosen in the firm of Rosen & Rosen and he practiced there for almost sixty years.
Sylvan Rosen was a skillful trial lawyer and was also active in probate, real estate and business matters. One of the most popular and respected citizens of Georgetown, he served as mayor of that city from 1948 until 1961 and as Georgetown county attorney for more than forty years. Active in his church, he was president of Beth Elohin congregation and served as president of the South Carolina Association of B’nai B’rith. He married Irma Levkoff in 1934, she predeceased him in 1990. Sylvan Rosen died on May 2, 1996. He is survived by two sons, Benedict P. Rosen of Myrtle Beach and Larry M. Rosen of Austin, Texas.
The new bridges over the Sampit River leading into Georgetown now bear the name of Sylvan L. Rosen and will remind the traveler of this splendid lawyer who served his community and his profession so well.
