James McDonald was educated at Erskine College, receiving an A.B. and undertook the private study of law in the firm of McCants and Douglass.
In 1882, he married Miss Lillie Elliott. He was admitted to practice in 1880 and soon had a clientele of substantial persons and organizations. He practiced in Winnsboro until his death.
From his early youth, he was a constant reader of the biographies of great men. He served as a Circuit Solicitor from 1884 until 1892 and served as a Special Judge on many occasions.
His advice to a young man was “I urge the great importance of the systematic study of the best books. Always speak the truth and deal honestly with all men. Cultivate habits of cheerfulness and sobriety. Have faith in God and believe in yourself.” The father of three able lawyers and the grandfather of three young, but promising ones. It was a progeny to be proud of.
