The son of Clarence C. and Mable P. Brown, he was born in Port Royal. He served as President of the Student Body and Valedictorian of Beaufort High School.
He graduated from Furman University with an A.B. in 1962. He was a member of Blue Key, the Student Legislator, Who’s Who Among Colleges and Universities, winner of the Chicago Tribune ROTC Award, the American Legion College Award, and the Dean’s List. After serving two years as an infantry officer with the Airborne and Rangers, he attended the University of Virginia Law School, graduating in 1967. While at the University of Virginia, he was a member of the Moot Court Board and was Writing Director of the Virginia Legal Research Group.
He practiced law in Columbia with the firm of Nexsen, Pruet, Jacobs and Pollard. He served as President of the Columbia Young Lawyers in 1970, as President of the Young Lawyers Sector of the South Carolina Bar in 1973, as Member of the Executive Committee in 1974, and as a member of the House of Delegates, serving on the Committee on Continuing Legal Education. The South Carolina Supreme Court recently adopted a major portion of his Committee’s report.
He was an active participant in the American Cancer Society, the SPCA, Kilbourne Road Baptist Church and other civic activities.
In his untimely death, the Bar lost one of its most promising leaders.
