William Heyward Grimball was born in Charleston in 1917 and died there on September 6, 1999 at the age of eighty-two. His father had been a circuit judge and “Billy” said he knew by the age of five that he wanted to be a lawyer. He graduated second in his class from the College of Charleston and then earned his law degree from the University of Virginia in 1940. During World War II, he served as Chief Engineer aboard the Destroyer Meade. After the war, he had a private practice in Charleston and later formed a partnership with Robert McC. Figg and others. His practice was general with an emphasis on civil litigation. He was a past President of the Charleston County Bar, Grand Master of the Masons of South Carolina, a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers, and an active, life-long member of St. Michael’s Church. He is survived by his widow, the former Frances Lucas Ellerbe and four sons.
