Carlisle Roberts was born in Tatum, South Carolina on April 5, 1909, the son of William David and Marion Edith Kearse Roberts. He is survived by his widow, Hamilton Warren Roberts, a daughter and two sons, one of whom, Pinckney, practices in his father’s firm. The other son, Carl, studies law.
He graduated from Wofford College in 1929 after three years attendance and from the University of South Carolina Law School in 1932, and Columbia University Law School in 1935, all with first honors. He was a Phi Beta Kappa and a member of the Phi Delta Phi and Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternities.
So brilliant was his mind that, forthwith upon graduation, he became a member of the law faculty and remained there for twenty-two years, mainly in the realms of creditors’ rights and contracts. During this time, he was also engaged in private practice in Columbia.
He served his country in wartime as a United States Naval Officer and in peacetime, his civic accomplishments were many and varied.
Above all, his unerring legal judgment, scholarship and perserverance gained for him, among Bench and Bar, a superb reputation for excellence, a hallmark of the man.
