Mac Singletary, as he was known to his family and friends, was born in Bishopville, South Carolina on June 12, 1919, the son of Robert Howell Singletary and Ila McLeod Singletary. He as awarded an A.B. degree in Accounting from the University of South Carolina and his LL.B. degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law. In 1947 he went into the private practice of law with his cousin Yancy A. McLeod. They formed the law firm of McLeod and Singletary and practiced together for 25 years. During this time he also served as the attorney for the Legislative Council of the General Assembly of South Carolina from 1950–1961. In 1972 he joined the McNair Law Firm.
He was a member of the Richland County, South Carolina and American Bar Associations; the S.C. Trial Lawyers Association; Kappa Sigma; Blue Key; and O.D.K. Leadership Fraternity. He was a life member of the University of South Carolina Alumni Association serving a term as its president; a life member of Sertoma Club International; and a long-time member of the Board of Carolina Children’s Home. He served as a member and Chairman of the S.C. Aeronautics Commission, a member of the Board of Visitors for Coker College, and retired as a Colonel in the Judge Advocate General Corps, USAR.
Mac attended Eastminster Presbyterian Church and served as an Elder and Clerk of Session; as a member of the Presbyterian Home Board; a member of the Pulpit Committee; President of the Men of the Church; and as a Sunday School teacher. He was a long time member and served as President of the Bull Run Fishing Club.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Anne Buckner Singletary, a daughter, Joan Thrash Fraley, two granddaughters, Cheryl Fraley Morlan and Debra Fraley Price, and four great grandchildren.
