The Honorable Hubert Eugene Long (1921–2000)

Hubert Eugene Long was born on June 2, 1921, son of Eugene Wilton Long and Sara Bertha Shealy Long. He graduated from Batesburg-Leesville High School and graduated from Clemson University in 1943. In 1948, he received a law degree from the University of South Carolina Law School, and in 1984, he graduated from the National Judicial College at Reno, Nevada.

Admitted to the Bar in 1948, he was senior partner in the law firm at Lexington, now known as Bouknight, Nicholson, Davis, Frawley, Anderson & Ayer. He was a member of the House of Representatives from 1950–1952, Solicitor of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit from 1952–1978, elected as Circuit Judge in 1984 and retired in 1991.

He was a member of the American Bar Association and S.C. Bar Association, having served on the Board of Governors, Executive Committee, Chairman of the House of Delegates, and Chairman of the Continuing Legal Education Committee. He was a charter member of the S.C. Bar Foundation and inducted into the American College of Trial Lawyers in 1981.

Hubert Long served as Chairman of the Greater Columbia Economic Development Commission, Columbia Chamber of Commerce, where he served on the Board and Executive Committee. He was past President of the Batesburg-Leesville Chamber of Commerce and the American Legion Post #61. He received the Lexington County Man of the Year Award and served as past President of the Lions Club. He also served as past Chairman of the Ridge District Boy Scouts from which he received the Silver Beaver Award. He was a charter member of the Baptist Hospital Foundation and served on the Lexington Medical Center Foundation Board.

Of noted importance, he was a member of Wittenberg Lutheran Church, served for six years on the State Executive Board, was past Sunday School Superintendent, and taught Sunday School for forty-five years.

He was married to the former Mary Frances Wessinger and they have two children, Nancy L. Pierce and Hubert Eugene Long, Jr., and four grandchildren.
