Robert Stone Galloway, Jr. was born on August 19, 1928 in Due West, South Carolina. Bob, as he was known, was the eldest son of Robert Stone Galloway, Sr. Bob had one brother and three sisters, one of whom was the late Jean Galloway Bissell, formal general counsel to The South Carolina National Bank and Associate Justice of the United States Court of Appeals in Washington, DC.
In 1945, Bob received a full tennis scholarship to The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, at the time a national tennis power.
Immediately, upon graduation from college, Bob enrolled in the University of South Carolina School of Law. He received his law degree from USC in 1952 and, that year, joined the law firm of Haynsworth & Haynsworth in Greenville, one of the largest firms in the state, and where he practiced with that firm and its successors during his entire career.
Bob’s primary area of practice was Workers’ Compensation Defense. At one time or another, Bob represented most businesses in the upstate. Many says that he “wrote the book” on Workers’ Compensation law.
Bob was married in 1953 to the former Mary Eleanor Barron of Rock Hill. He was survived by two children, Robert III, a shareholder of the law firm of Sinkler & Boyd, P.A. in Greenville, and Elizabeth, a partner in the law firm of Taft, Stettinius & Hollister in Cincinnati, Ohio, and by two grandchildren (both of whom will likely grow up to be lawyers).
