Charles S. Porter, Jr. graduated cum laude from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1961. Thereafter, he served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, law clerk to U.S. District Judge J. Robert Martin, law partner of the late Terrell L. Glenn, and a litigation attorney and shareholder of the McNair Law Firm.
Porter was active in the legal profession, serving as a Bar examiner, member and president of the S.C. Bar Foundation, and member and chair of the Memory Hold the Door Committee of the South Carolina Bar. In 1999, he was the recipient of the USC School of Law’s Compleat Lawyer Award. Porter had a love for bridges and was keenly interested in the construction of the Arthur Ravenel, Jr. Bridge in Charleston, watching its progress daily as he traveled over the old bridge. The S.C. Department of Transportation granted his last wish, permission to visit the top of the new bridge, five days prior to his death in March 2005 and prior to the bridge’s completion.
Porter is survived by his wife, Sue; son, Charles Simpson Porter Ⅲ and daughter-in-law, Tracy; daughter, Lauren Porter Jambro and son-in-law, Joe; grandson, Daniel Kaler Dehart and his wife Cheryl; grandson, Charles Simpson Porter IV; grandson, Kevin Carlisle and his wife, Mary Beth; grandson, Nicholas Jambro; and granddaughters, Hayden Porter and Kaelyn Carlisle.
