Professor George D. Haimbaugh, Jr. served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II from 1941 to 1946, achieving the rank of Major. In the 1950’s, he spent three years in Europe pursuing independent study in media law. He traveled extensively throughout Europe as a newspaper reporter covering film festivals, and he was at the Cannes Film Festival interviewing Grace Kelly the same day she met Prince Rainier.
Haimbaugh earned his Juris Doctor from Northwestern University and his Doctorate of Juridical Science from Yale University in 1960. He began his teaching career at the University of Akron School of Law. Haimbaugh came to the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1963 and remained until his retirement in 1987, at which time he was awarded the Order of the Palmetto, the state’s highest honor. From 1978 until his retirement, he held the David W. Robinson Chair, after which he continued to teach as Professor Emeritus until 1997.
Haimbaugh is survived by his wife, Kay.
