Theodore Bogert Guerard was born March 10, 1930 in Charleston. He graduated with high honors from the College of Charleston in 1950, and from the University of South Carolina Law School, a member of Wig and Robe in 1953. He joined the firm of Sinkler, Gibbs & Simons, where he soon became a highly respected bond attorney. In 1975 he left to practice alone, but later formed the firm of McKay & Guerard, one of the largest and most respected firms in South Carolina. In 1964, he was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives where he served three terms. Renowned for his ability and his integrity, Theodore Guerard was asked to serve on many boards, including the State Ports Authority, the College of Charleston, Roper Hospital, Historic Charleston Foundation and The Bank of South Carolina.
Following his death on February 26, 1997, a newspaper editorial stated, “His manner was unassuming, his ethics were impeccable, his intellect made his counsel widely sought. In all his endeavors, Theodore Guerard set the standard for excellence.”
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Maybank Guerard, two daughters, Elizabeth Parker and Anne Colletta, and a son, Russell Guerard.
