Elected to the State Legislature in 1842 and State Senate in 1846; Member of the State Conventions of 1852, 1860, and 1863; First Signer of the Ordinance of Secession on December 20, 1860; President of the Greenville and Columbia Railroad, 1853-1866. Trustee of South Carolina College (now the University of South Carolina), 1857-1862, The Citadel, Davidson College in North Carolina and Oglethorpe University in Georgia.

Born on October 1, 1805 in Abbeville County, South Carolina.

Education: South Carolina College, A.B., 1826; Admitted to South Carolina Bar, 1828.
