Jack Grimball, as we all knew him, a native son of Charleston, was a graduate of that City’s College of Charleston in 1935. He entered the University of Virginia Law School from which he graduated with an LL.B. degree in 1938. His family enjoyed a noble heritage in the law. His father served as a Circuit Judge.
He practiced law in Columbia and entered World War II as a private and was subsequently promoted to the rank of Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves. While on active duty he was awarded the Silver Star for bravery in the Battle of the Bulge, and the Distinguished Service Cross for his leadership at the Remagen Bridge. After the war he returned to his law practice and was subsequently elevated to the Circuit Bench in 1960.
He served as Junior Warden, Senior Warden and Sunday School Teacher at Trinity Cathedral. To Jack Grimball duty was a blessing, not a burden, but an opportunity. Everyone loved this rare man.
