Robert King Wise, the son of Allen Garlington Wise and Rebecca King Birge Wise, was born in Prosperity, South Carolina on October 21, 1892 and died on September 2, 1981. He was married to Mary DeWalt Hunter of Prosperity from 1933 until her death in 1974. He was a graduate of Newberry College and Harvard Law School. He served in the Navy during World War I, ending his tour of duty with the rank of Ensign. He practiced law in Columbia from 1921 until his retirement in 1978, as a sole practitioner and as a partner in the firms of Wise and Whaley; Wise, Whaley and McCutchen; and Wise, Wise and Shealy. He was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and served, without compensation, as the attorney for the Lutheran Seminary, the South Carolina Lutheran Synod and the Lowman Home. He was a long standing member of the American Legion, serving as Commander of Richland Post No. 6, Department Commander for the State of South Carolina, Committeeman and Vice-Chairman of the National Military Affairs Committee and a member of the 40 & 8. In 1976, he was named the Outstanding Legionnaire of South Carolina. He was past President of the Richland County Bar Association and held memberships in the South Carolina and American Bar Associations, the American Judicature Society, the American Trial Lawyers Association and The South Carolina Plaintiff’s Association.
