Charles William Fraser Spencer, Jr. (1911–1985)

Born May 15, 1911 in Rock Hill, son of William Charles Fraser Spencer, Sr. and Ethel Chaplin Spencer. Lifelong resident of Rock Hill. He married Elise Fairley and they had two children, Charles William Fraser Spencer III and Elise Spencer Lindsay.

He was a graduate of Davidson College, cum laude, in 1932 and the University of South Carolina Law School in 1935. He was admitted to practice in South Carolina and joined his distinguished father’s firm that year. He was a member of the Bar of the United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and Supreme Court of the United States; he was a longtime member of the Board of Bar Examiners of this State.

He was a past President of the South Carolina Municipal Association, Secretary-Treasurer of the York County Democratic Committee, Lieutenant Commander of the United States Naval Reserve, active duty from 1942 to 1946, lifetime Presbyterian and past Chairman of the Board of Deacons of his Church. In addition to many corporate directorships, he was former Director of the Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce and former local Chairman, Secretary and Director of the American Red Cross.
