Shepard Kollock Nash was born in Sumter County, the son of Shepard Nash and Ann McDonald Law Nash. He attended Davidson College, read law in the office of Wayne Clifton and was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 1917. He was a member of the Sumter County, South Carolina and American Bar Associations and the American College of Trial Lawyers. He was appointed by the State Supreme Court as Chairman of the South Carolina Board of Grievances and Discipline and served as a Special Judge on numerous occasions. He served in the State House of Representatives from Sumter County for two years and in the State Senate for twelve years. He was Chairman of the Sumter Democratic Party for 18 years and a delegate to the National Democratic Party Convention in 1932.
He was President of the South Carolina Wildlife Federation, the Sumter Kiwanis Club, the Community Chest, the Y.M.C.A., Exalted Ruler of Sumter Lodge No. 64, and Potentate of Omar Temple.
He served on the Sumter County School Board, was Chairman Emeritus of the National Bank of South Carolina and Deacon and Trustee of the First Presbyterian Church.
He married Nancy Witherspoon McKay in 1917. He was survived by two daughters, Nancy Nash Reynolds and Sally Nash Wilson, five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. His son, Shepard K. Nash, predeceased him. Shep Nash was a kindly man who loved his fellow man. He was a trial attorney without peer who championed his client’s cause.
