The son of Robert and Amanda Moss Love, James Love was born in York in 1891. He married Lucyle Smith Love. Mr. Love was a graduate of Erskine College, received an LL.B. degree from the University of South Carolina and an M.A. degree from the University of Wisconsin. He was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 1916.
He began his law practice in Greenville and interrupted it to serve during World War I. At the time of his death, he was senior member of the law firm of Love, Thornton, Arnold and Thomason.
Mr. Love was a member of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church and served as a deacon and a ruling elder. He taught the Men’s Bible Class for more than twenty-five years. He was a member of the State Legislature and served on the Greenville City Council. The editorial in The Greenville News following his death stated as follows:
“Such public service is rare, and the only reward often is in seeing a need met, a job well done. James L. Love was a modest man and he sought no praise or special thanks for performing his tasks beyond the call of duty. We can only say thanks and wish there were more people around with the dedication to the public good.”
