Benjamin Johnson was a distinguished tax, business and corporate attorney who acted as a spokesman for South Carolina’s textile industry. He was the son of United States District Judge Joseph Johnson and Sara Anderson Johnson. He was an honor graduate at Wofford College.
After studying law with his brother, Harvey W. Johnson, he became attorney for the City of Spartanburg. In 1942, he became counsel for Spartan Mills and later was Vice-President and General Counsel. He attained excellence in tax, business and corporate law.
He testified on many occasions before the Congressional Committee on behalf of the South Carolina Textile Manufacturers Institute. While General Counsel for Seapak Corporation, he served as Chairman of the Legislative Committee of the American Fisheries Industry and was General Counsel of the Spartanburg County Foundation.
He was an outstanding bridge player who won regional and national tournaments. He was Captain of the American Bridge Team that won the World Championship and served as General Counsel for the World Bridge Federation.
In everything, excellence was his uncompromising goal. He attained a position of respect equaled by few. He was survived by his widow, Mallie Bomar Johnson; sister, Elizabeth Johnson McWhorter; stepson, J.E. Younce, Jr. and three nieces.
